"The quality of education directly correlates to our city's economic development. One of our city's greatest losses could come from the increased expense and reduced talent that will be the product of not addressing our schools' needs today. Communities In Schools gives businesses a chance at making a difference every day."

Barbara Boyd, Nationwide
Associate Vice President, Education Partnerships

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Help Our Children Graduate From High School

Education is not a privilege; it's entitled to every child, however, it cannot be the sole responsibility of a school system. It is our responsibility because every child belongs to a community.

Yet, today the reality is children face hunger daily, insecurity from unstable families, and inadequate medical attention. Violence and abuse haunt their lives and erect physical and mental barriers to education. And sadly, statistics reveal that because of these barriers, an alarmingly low number of high-risk youth graduate from Columbus and Whitehall City Schools successfully.

Communities In Schools (CIS) has services and programming in place to achieve this goal. To continue and expand our services to the students in Central Ohio, we depend upon the financial support of corporations and community foundations as well as community volunteers.

Students CIS serves (2009-2010)

  • 50% of schools CIS served improved their attendance rates or maintained state standard attendance (All elementary schools exceeded the 93% standard)
  • 88% of targeted students decreased or had no out of school suspensions
  • 88% of targeted students decreased their behavioral incidents
  • 53% of targeted students decreased or had no unexcused absences
  • 88% of students reported that they feel better about themselves and their future after receiving services from CIS
